Ayn Rand’s philosophy, Objectivism, holds that reality exists independently of our beliefs, that reason rather than faith or emotion is humanity’s fundamental means of understanding it, and that the proper moral purpose of an individual’s life is the pursuit of rational self-interest and personal flourishing, rather than self-sacrifice as a moral ideal. She regarded individual rights—especially life, liberty, property and freedom of association—as essential because individuals must be free to think, produce and pursue their own happiness. Politically, this led her to advocate laissez-faire capitalism, with government restricted principally to protecting individual rights through police, courts and national defense. Rand celebrated productive achievement, independence, ambition and creativity and rejected collectivism and the idea that individuals morally belong to society or have an automatic duty to sacrifice themselves for others.
