According to the assistant coach Tamati Ellison, both players who were sidelined due to health protocols, are back in training and are contenders for selection. Their return could not come at a more crucial time with the series currently locked at one apiece.
"Yeah, they’ve both trained well today, so it’s good to have more bodies on board versus sending them home."
The All Blacks are approaching the game with a relaxed mindset, benefiting from a break in their usually packed schedule. Ellison highlighted the importance of this downtime in preparing for the high-stakes game.
Ellison also discussed the mental fortitude of the team, led by mental performance coach Gilbert Enoka, a veteran in managing the pressures of test match rugby. The team's leadership is crucial in building up to the big game.
"We’re very blessed with [Gilbert Enoka]. He’s seen a few Test matches, as have a lot of our leaders ... You build the week the way you want it."
Asked about the difficulties of communication in the expected vibrant atmosphere at the Calabash with over 84,000 fans, Ellison admitted the challenge but likened it to managing a bustling household.
"You’ve just got to get closer. But a lot of it is non-verbal signalling as well, making sure there are 15 players ready to attack, so people are in the right positions and trusting they’ll be where they need to be," he explained.
"In specific areas – lineout calling, play calling – it makes sense to get that message delivered and getting closer ... There’s plenty of noise, alright. But it’s like anything; same at home when you’ve got six children, you can’t hear yourself think! Sometimes you’ve just got to get a wee bit closer and simplify the message."
Ellison also commented on his collaboration with fellow former All Black and defence coach Tana Umaga, noting their progress in enhancing the team's defensive maneuvers and adapting to the Springboks' tactical approaches.
"We’re getting there. The start wasn’t ideal, but there’s been a lot of instances where we’ve defended them well in the middle of the field and turned them to their kicking game ... having the skill sets to deal with the kicking game will be important," stated Ellison.
