Lions coach Ivan van Rooyen was forthright in his appraisal of the match, commending the Bulls for their strong performance while acknowledging his team's shortcomings. "I don’t want to take anything away from the Bulls. I think they were exceptional," he conceded.
"It felt like we played against 10 or 12 Springboks today and they were good."
However, van Rooyen quickly pointed out areas needing improvement for the Lions. "But in saying that, with all the respect in the world, I thought we were really below par. A lot of the fixes will be on us." The game took a decisive turn at the 25-minute mark after the Lions were temporarily reduced to 14 men due to a yellow card issued to Morné van den Berg for a cynical play at the breakdown.
"The yellow card was quite costly," van Rooyen noted. "We let in two soft first-phase tries in that period. We couldn’t hold onto the ball or build pressure in attack. We have still got to get out the blocks."
Lions captain Francke Horn also reflected on the match, emphasizing the severe impact of the Bulls' early lead. "If you give the Bulls 31 points in the first half with three tries that didn’t go past two phases, that puts you under pressure," Horn explained.
"We need to be more focused, more clinical, and if things go a bit bad, just calm down and get cool heads."
Horn remained optimistic despite the setback. "It will be a shame if this one result determines the whole of the next seven months," he added. "We worked hard to get where we are and we know what we need to do."
With this commanding win, the Bulls demonstrated their prowess and sent a strong message to their competitors in the URC. Meanwhile, the Lions are set to regroup and address their flaws as they continue to push forward in the season.
