Exeter Chiefs: Dweba's Return and Team Updates

Exeter Chiefs' director of rugby Rob Baxter has provided an update on the state of his squad, particularly addressing the omission of Springboks hooker Joseph Dweba from the season's starting lineups and discussing player recoveries. Dweba, a pivotal figure in last year's campaign, has been absent from the team's initial matches against Bristol Bears and Gloucester, sparking questions about his current standing within the squad.

Baxter clarified that the decision to omit Dweba was based on form rather than fitness, noting that the player is fully engaged in training and close to making a return. "Joseph’s fine and in full training, but we just went on form for the first selection," Baxter stated. He emphasized the competitive nature within the squad, particularly for the hooker position, acknowledging the strong performances from other players.

"He’s training well, but like everyone else he’s just got to keep his head down and train well. His opportunities will come shortly. He’s not far away; he’s working hard and showing a good attitude in training."

The Chiefs' roster depth is further bolstered by the return of Max Norey, who after a notable previous season, is back to full fitness, adding more options for Baxter in selection.

Moreover, Exeter is looking forward to the return of several key players for the upcoming match against Bath. The squad has been grappling with illness and injury, but Baxter is hopeful as the team regains strength. "It looks a bit better," he commented, noting the reduction in illness among the players and the stabilizing team selection.

The Chiefs are also set to welcome back Tommy Wyatt, an outside back returning from a 16-month hiatus due to an ACL injury. Baxter confirmed Wyatt's recovery from a recent shoulder injury and his readiness for selection. "He’s back now, he’s over that shoulder bang he had. It wasn’t particularly bad, so that’s good news. He’s in full training now and available for selection."

Another player on the brink of a comeback is the Italian international Ross Vintcent, who has been recovering from a preseason hamstring injury. Baxter suggests a cautious approach to Vintcent's return, recognizing the demands on high-speed athletes like him. "He’s close; whether this week is a week too early or not, we’ll have to wait and see. But he’s getting close," Baxter added.

With these updates, Exeter Chiefs are gearing up to strengthen their lineup as they aim to overcome early-season hurdles and position themselves strongly in the Premiership Rugby competition. Baxter's judicious management of player health and form could be crucial as they navigate the challenges of a demanding sport.
