Following an intense showdown expected in this week’s URC clash, Bulls captain Hanro Liebenberg emphasizes the paramount importance of discipline as they prepare to take on the Lions at Loftus Versfeld. Now at the helm due to Marcell Coetzee's injury, the seasoned 30-year-old flanker warns against letting emotions dictate the game.
"I think we’re all adults. We’ve all got to take care of our emotions on the field. At the end of the day, there’s a captain, but everyone’s got to control themselves and look after themselves."
Liebenberg acknowledges the fine line between aggressive play and costly penalties. With the Lions known for their dynamic and expansive gameplay, any lapse in discipline could spell trouble for the Bulls.
"Yes, we want to be on that edge and be ready to go and have that aggressive nature, but there is also a line. I think if you’re going to cross that line against the Lions and give away penalties, they’re going to punish you."
Amidst challenges, Liebenberg remains optimistic, drawing confidence from the Bulls' narrow 26-22 defeat against Munster last week. The match's outcome, though unfavorable, showcased a level of performance he believes can inspire a substantial effort in their upcoming game.
"Rugby is a funny game. Sometimes you’re the better team and you lose, sometimes you’re the better team and you win. It’s just the bounce of the ball sometimes."
Liebenberg's return to Pretoria after a long stint with the Leicester Tigers in England has rejuvenated his passion for the game. He praises the solid team dynamics and the supportive coaching staff which have made his transition back into South African rugby seamless and rewarding.
"It’s almost brought that love of the game back to me a bit. I was away for seven years, a bit out of touch, out of feel with South African rugby. But since being here, I’ve loved every minute."
With the stage set for a riveting encounter, the Bulls are poised to harness the lessons from past games and the strategic insights of their seasoned captain to clinch a victory against their regional rivals this weekend.
