Jacques Vermeulen, the dynamic player known for his versatility, has been sidelined for upcoming matches of Sale Sharks due to a dangerous play incident. He has accepted a four-game suspension after being red carded 20 minutes into a clash with Saracens last Sunday. Vermeulen was found guilty of making contact with the head of the opposing scrumhalf, Tomos Williams, during a ruck clearance at StoneX Stadium, breaching World Rugby Law 9.11. An independent panel reviewed and confirmed the charge, resulting in his suspension.
The suspension will see Vermeulen missing several key games including this Sunday’s home fixture against Harlequins in the Premiership, and an important Investec Champions Cup match against Glasgow Warriors slated for October 17. Additionally, he will be absent for away games against Newcastle Red Bulls on October 23 and Bath on October 31.
Despite the setback of being reduced to 13 players, Sale Sharks demonstrated resilience and skill by securing a 21-17 victory over Saracens. Vermeulen, a seasoned player who shifted to Sale in the summer of 2025 after six seasons with Exeter Chiefs, will be a significant loss for the team in these matches. During his tenure at Exeter, he was a pivotal player with over 100 caps and more than 30 tries to his name.
Before moving to the UK, Vermeulen honed his skills with Western Province and the Sharks in South Africa, and also enjoyed a stint as a Junior Springbok. His capability to play both lock and loose forward adds considerable value to his team, making his absence in the upcoming games all the more challenging for Sale.
Vermeulen’s role in the past matches and his influence on the team dynamics underscore the impact his suspension might have on Sale’s performance in the critical upcoming fixtures. The team will need to make strategic adjustments to compensate for his absence and maintain their competitive edge in both domestic and international competitions.
