Kriel Eager for Bok-Filled Clash at Loftus

Lions center Richard Kriel is all geared up for a formidable challenge when his team faces the Bulls this Saturday at the iconic Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. The early-season United Rugby Championship clash pits these Highveld rivals against each other, with a particularly strong Bulls team that includes multiple Springboks back in action.

The Lions, coached by Ivan van Rooyen, currently sit third on the leaderboard following victories over Ospreys and Leinster at home. History, however, leans towards the Bulls who have dominated this derby with eight wins against just two losses.

Despite the Lions coming off a tight loss to Munster in Limerick, the anticipation is high within their camp. The Bulls’ lineup could feature top-tier talents like Canan Moodie and Handrè Pollard, presenting a tactical puzzle for the Lions. Kriel, pumped for the showdown, expressed his excitement about facing such high-caliber opponents.

"They have their Boks coming back, and we don’t know if it will be Harold Vorster, Stravino Jacobs, or Handrè Pollard who might play 12," Kriel conveyed to reporters in Joburg. "We don’t know who to prepare for, but that’s also the exciting part. We are looking forward to it regardless of who it is, but it’s going to be a huge challenge."

This matchup marks the first Jukskei derby without Kriel’s brother David, now with La Rochelle, adding a personal twist to the rivalry. Despite his brother's absence, Richard remains focused on the task at hand.

"For me, it’s still a rugby game," said Kriel. "It’s the Bulls playing against the Lions; it’s still a massive game, regardless of whether my boet is there or not."

Kriel has also adapted to a more physically demanding role at inside center, having bulked up this season. His new role involves orchestrating plays for his teammates, a responsibility he relishes.

"I’m definitely enjoying 12," he continued. "For me, personally, setting up the tries for the wingers is the best."

As the teams prepare to face off, the outcome of this game could set the tone for their seasons, making it more than just about bragging rights but a crucial early indicator of their championship prospects.
