In a potentially challenging twist for the Lions, their preparations for the anticipated Jukskei derby against the Bulls might be compromised as key backline players, Erich Cronjé and Henco van Wyk, face health challenges ahead of the clash at Loftus Versfeld. Cronjé is battling a hamstring issue, while Van Wyk is under concussion protocols.
The Lions' utility back, Cronjé, encountered a hamstring strain during last week's victory against the Ospreys at Ellis Park. Despite playing through pain, he was substituted 61 minutes into the game as a precaution. Lions assistant coach Julian Redelinghuys emphasized the importance of not rushing Cronjé back into play, especially with the European tour on the horizon.
"I’m not sure if he’ll be ready in time to play this weekend or next weekend. There are therefore a few big decisions that we have to make, but we know there are other men in the group who can fill that position."
Meanwhile, center Henco van Wyk missed last week's game due to a concussion and his participation in the upcoming derby remains uncertain as he continues to be monitored by the medical team.
The Lions are coming off a strong start to their URC campaign, standing third after a solid 35-19 win over the Ospreys, maintaining their unbeaten streak. On the other hand, the Bulls, currently seventh, look to rebound from a narrow 26-22 loss at Munster, where they secured a losing bonus point.
Looking ahead to the derby, Redelinghuys predicted a fierce contest, especially in the scrums, reflecting the intense rivalry and pride at stake when South African teams collide.
"These are two proud packs of forwards. When you play against a South African team, you can be sure that the levels of intensity will be higher, especially in the set-pieces."
As the game approaches, both teams will be keen to assert their dominance, making the availability of key players like Cronjé and van Wyk crucial for the Lions' strategy and execution.
