Reflecting on his time abroad, Notshe expressed how it shaped his approach to the game.
"I really enjoyed my time there. I learnt a lot from the way that the French play – it is very set-piece-oriented and up-front rugby,"Notshe shared.
Notshe is optimistic about blending into the Lions' dynamic style of play, which contrasts with the structured French approach.
"The Lions are a little bit more expansive. They throw the ball around. I’m just looking forward to it."he remarked.
The move to the Lions isn't just a change of scenery for Notshe; it's also about adapting to a squad brimming with emerging talents. The competition for a starting spot among the loose forwards is fierce, highlighted by the presence of young aces like Siba Mahashe. Yet, Notshe sees this as more of an opportunity than a challenge.
Facing the realities of aging in a sport dominated by youthful energy, Notshe is determined to keep pace. "The loose-forward depth at the Lions is strong. And getting older pushes you to keep up with the young guys like Siba Mahashe. That’s why you have to keep in good nick, so all that combines. I’m looking forward to the season ahead now," he explained.
Throughout his career, Notshe has accumulated invaluable lessons from his international experiences and domestic play, which include six appearances for the Springboks and seasons with both the Stormers and the Sharks. He is keen on fostering a spirit of mentorship within the Lions.
Emphasizing the importance of collaboration and mutual growth, Notshe looks forward to working closely with his teammates, including team captain Francke Horn. "It’s a healthy competition. That’s how I see it. It is about improvement and learning from one another. I think that’s the most important thing – working together as a group instead of working as an individual. I tap into [captain] Francke (Horn); Francke taps into me. It’s a work in progress," he stated.
As Notshe gears up for an exciting chapter with the Lions, his blend of international experience and local prowess could be just what the team needs to enhance their performance in the fiercely competitive United Rugby Championship.
