The Cape Town-based team is training Norton to simultaneously manage the positions of lock and blindside flank, a dual role previously mastered by South African greats Pieter-Steph du Toit and Franco Mostert.
The Stormers' Director of Rugby, John Dobson, has actively positioned Norton in the No 7 slot during practice sessions. This strategy aims to develop Norton into the versatile type of player that Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus values highly.
Norton's physical stats are impressive, standing 1.99 meters tall and weighing 117 kilograms, aligning well with the profiles of Du Toit and Mostert. He has demonstrated considerable endurance and skill, highlighted by his complete performance in an 80-minute game against the Barbarians where he carried eight times, made 11 tackles, and won four lineouts.
"We are very happy with where Riley is now," Dobson told Rapport. "He definitely recovered from his injury quicker than we expected. Credit to him for his work ethic. He is known for that."
Unfortunately, a hamstring injury stalled Norton's chance to debut in a Test match against England at Ellis Park. However, his recovery has progressed well, and he is slated to potentially appear in a pre-season warm-up game against the Vodacom Bulls.
Looking ahead, Norton may join the Stormers for their game against Connacht in Galway on September 25 if his condition remains stable. This match could mark his official debut with the team, presenting him the opportunity to showcase his improved versatility and strength on an international platform.
