The Sharks are set for an energetic start to their season, first clashing with the Ospreys on the forthcoming Saturday and then squaring off against current champions, Leinster, on the 3rd of October. However, their South African internationals are presently committed in Perth, gearing up for a face-off with the Wallabies soon.
Post-Australia, the Boks will journey to the northern hemisphere for the Nations Championship, starting on November 7 in Turin against Italy and wrapping up with a finals weekend in Twickenham towards the end of November.
"They're obviously playing next week and then they will be back with us after that. They will be with us until the end of October. Then they go into the end-of-year tour, and then December they're back with us."
Pietersen expects captain André Esterhuizen to return in time for the high-stakes game against Leinster, conditional on all going smoothly.
"André will probably be back for the Leinster game, if everything goes well."
Given the grueling 2026 season, which included a series of four back-to-back tests against the All Blacks, Pietersen anticipates his international players will take their compulsory eight-week break during February and March of next year.
The Sharks approach this URC season with a robust 67-man roster. Pietersen stressed the necessity of player rotation, attributing it to injury unpredictabilities and the challenge posed by extensive travels from South Africa to Europe.
With the dual challenge of the URC and EPCR Challenge Cup on their plate, the Sharks’ management has underscored the importance of maintaining a fresh squad throughout the grueling season extending from September to June.
Pietersen highlighted the squad's strategy, "We made it clear that we want to rotate the squad, but if you perform, you will get rewarded and play. The squad knows it."
Strategically, the Sharks plan to harness their expansive team depth, while simultaneously keeping their key players in peak condition to tackle the long season stretching ahead. With such preparations, the Sharks aim to navigate through their fixtures efficiently, ensuring both performance excellence and player welfare.
