Siba Mahashe: Rugby's Rising Star Shines Bright

Siba Mahashe, the Lions' emerging rugby star, attributes his swift rise in the sport to hard work, familial support, and a constant pursuit of improvement. Despite only making his United Rugby Championship (URC) debut eight months ago, the 22-year-old is now celebrated as one of South Africa's most promising talents.

Mahashe's exceptional abilities were spotlighted when he joined a Springboks alignment camp in May, followed closely by his debut for SA A against Zimbabwe in Gqeberha. His reputation was further solidified with a standout performance against the All Blacks in August, earning him the Man of the Match accolade during the Lions' electrifying encounter.

The season has started strongly for Mahashe, contributing to the Lions' two initial URC victories, positioning them third in the standings. A significant upcoming match awaits against the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld. Reflecting on his beginnings, Mahashe said, "I started playing rugby in primary school... It was a spontaneous decision that led to a lifelong passion."

"Rugby chose me," he fondly recalls the moment that pivoted his life's direction.

Mahashe's journey began in the Eastern Cape where he caught the eye at the Craven Week in 2022, playing for Border. This exposure led to his captaincy of the SA Schools team and later, honors with the Junior Springboks at the 2024 U20s World Championship. His move to Johannesburg marked the beginning of his professional career with the Lions, debuting against Lyon in the EPCR Challenge Cup before lighting up the URC against the Sharks.

"It was a dream come true for me," Mahashe shared, recognizing the rewards of his dedication and performance.

On facing the New Zealand team, Mahashe described the experience as "unreal," especially confronting the haka, a pre-game ritual he had grown up watching. His connection with the Lions runs deep, emphasizing that their drive extends beyond personal glory to encompass the spirit of their supporters in Johannesburg.

Mahashe's tenure with the Lions has been marked by significant achievements, including winning the SA Shield last season. He credits the Lions' style of play for enhancing his skills as a loose forward, deeming it perfectly suited to his abilities.

With a promising career ahead, Mahashe continues to leverage his moments of 'unreality' into tangible success, marked by remarkable performances and a steadfast commitment to his team and the broader rugby community.
