Conrad Smith has thrown down the gauntlet, claiming the Springboks' midfield duo holds a decisive edge over the All Blacks as the clock ticks down to Saturday's decider at FNB Stadium. As the epic Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series is poised at a cliffhanger 1-1, Smith points to the midfield tussle as a pivotal battleground.
Jordie Barrett, now a linchpin at number 12 for the All Blacks, alongside Quinn Tupaea, has created a buzz with their budding chemistry. Despite their promise, Smith argues that they're not yet in the same league as the seasoned Springbok pair of Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel.
"Jordie’s become the first name we put on our team list. He’s had a season at Leinster which I think has just added to his all-round game. He’s been a constant performer for us for three or four years, and he’s just producing some massive games in the big moments, which is what you want to see from your leading players."
Smith acknowledges the skills of Barrett and Tupaea but insists that the Springboks’ De Allende and Kriel overshadow them with their rich vein of experience. The familiarity and synergy developed over numerous campaigns, he notes, could very well tip the scales.
"When you look at the South African combination, they have the experience which our boys currently don’t have. In four or five seasons, if Jordie and Quinn are still playing together, they might be as good as De Allende and Kriel. I remember playing against those two guys, so they are vastly experienced. If you have the intensity and the willingness, then so many other things go for you just because you’ve had so much time together."
As the series hangs in the balance, the pressure mounts. Smith foresees this high-stakes match-up testing the resolve of key players and leaving fans on the edge of their seats with its compelling narrative threads.
