The Springboks have some history when it comes to battling the All Blacks outside their familiar home grounds. During the 2021 Rugby Championship, which was disrupted by the global pandemic, they competed against their fierce rivals in Australia, initially falling short in Townsville but subsequently securing a narrow victory on the Gold Coast.
Following those encounters, the Boks showcased their prowess by winning against the All Blacks in a 2023 World Cup warm-up at Twickenham, and again, albeit by a slim margin, in the World Cup final staged at the Stade de France.
Speaking on the upcoming game in Baltimore, Erasmus emphasized the constant elements of the game despite the change in venue.
"Neutral ground is still 70m by 100m. I guess it’s going to be a good crowd. The only thing that we’ll really miss is our home support, and [the All Blacks] will also miss their home support."
The shift to American soil means both teams will forgo the passionate local fanfare they are accustomed to. Yet, Erasmus recalls several occasions where the Boks have had to marshal their spirits in the absence of home support, notably during a British & Irish Lions tour held behind closed doors and matches in the Rugby Championship under travel restrictions.
Erasmus cited previous experiences to underline the resilience and motivation that the team channels in the face of adversities.
"We played in front of no crowds in South Africa, when we were 1-0 down. We’ve played in Covid times in the Rugby Championship in Australia when there were almost no South Africans there because you couldn’t get out of the country."
Despite the lack of physical presence, Erasmus highlighted that the support from South African fans never wavers, which becomes a crucial motivator for the team. "We remember those who’ve stood by us, particularly after a loss when support could wane. It’s these moments that remind us who we're playing for," he explained.
His reflections not only underscore the geographical shifts in the sport but also the emotional and psychological steadfastness required to compete at the highest levels.
