In a recent match that saw the Stormers face off at Hive Stadium, Edinburgh, the team grappled with significant lineout challenges that contributed to their 17-13 defeat. Despite an intense game, the Stormers struggled, losing 11 crucial lineouts, even losing one during the critical moments of stoppage time as they chased a potential win on their northern hemisphere tour.
Springbok André-Hugo Venter, initially in the lineup, had to leave the field for an HIA in the 22nd minute and was replaced by Vernon Paulo, who found himself contending with the difficult windy conditions. This substitution marked a turning point, impacting the team’s lineout execution, traditionally a strength for the Stormers.
Post-match, John Dobson, the director of rugby, acknowledged the issues, emphasizing that the lineout failures were pivotal.
“From our side, we don’t have to look too much beyond our performance in the lineout. We lost 11 [and] you can’t win a game if your plan in those conditions is based around the maul,”Dobson said.
Further delving into the concerns, Deon Fourie, who had previously started at hooker for South Africa against the All Blacks, expressed that the issues at the lineout were collective rather than individual. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of their strategies and execution.
“Ja, we must go and look at the whole system, at the plan. It’s a bit harsh on the public out there and all the media outlets to point fingers just at Vernon. I think it’s a collective issue,”Fourie commented on Monday, highlighting his understanding and support for Paulo.
As they look ahead, the Stormers are set to address these issues rigorously, with a focus on improving their lineout performance before their upcoming coastal derby against the Sharks in Cape Town. Meanwhile, Fourie added words of encouragement and solidarity for his teammate, understanding the pressure that comes with the game.
“We’ll definitely support him. I’ve been there through my career — stuff that doesn’t go your way in a game and you feel a bit down, feeling like you’ve let the team down. But that’s absolutely not the case. Like I said, it’s a collective thing.”Fourie's words reflect the supportive environment within the team, aiming to bolster morale and improve collectively.
The critique and introspection within the Stormers camp seem geared towards a swift resolution to their lineout woes. As they prepare to take on the Sharks, the team looks to recalibrate and focus on a more cohesive and effective lineout strategy, hoping to secure a victory in front of their home crowd in Cape Town.
