As the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia approaches, Victor Matfield has narrowed down the potential victors to just three teams. The Springboks, New Zealand's All Blacks, and France are his top picks to contend for the ultimate title in rugby. Matfield, a former legendary lock, highlighted the advantages garnered from the All Blacks' recent tour of South Africa, suggesting it offered substantial preparation for Dave Rennie's squad.
On the topic of the All Blacks, Matfield shared his insights on an episode of SuperSport’s Final Whistle presents Side Entry, emphasizing the importance of their experiences in South Africa for their World Cup campaign.
“I think this will mean a lot to the All Blacks,”Matfield noted, adding,
“They will go away knowing what they are going to face at the World Cup. We must go into a World Cup as a favorite. It doesn’t matter what happens in the next few games we play.”
Continuing his analysis, Matfield reiterated his firm belief in the limited number of teams capable of clinching the title.
“I’ve said it from the beginning: there are just three teams that can win that World Cup, us, the All Blacks or France. I don’t think there’s any other team that can win three big games, and I think that’s why Rassie said three games. If you want to win a World Cup, you need to be able to win the quarter and semis, and it will be three tough games,”he explained.
The draw for the tournament has also sparked debate. Nick Mallett, another revered figure in South African rugby and former Springboks head coach, criticized the setup which sees South Africa and New Zealand potentially clashing in the quarterfinals, should both teams top their groups. This matchup would likely lead the winner to face France in the semifinals, assuming they also advance from their fixtures.
Mallett posited that reaching the final would present the Springboks with their least challenging match of the knockout stages.
“We’re going to have All Blacks and France in the semis, and then we’ll have to play someone else; the final will probably be our easiest game,”he argued, signaling a strategic perspective on the tournament's progression.
Matfield responded to Mallett’s comments by reflecting on past experiences and the importance of player management throughout the tournament. “That’s what we had in the previous World Cup. So you need to be able to deliver three weeks in a row, and for that, you need fresh legs. You need guys who haven’t played all four pool games as well, so you need to be able to manage yourself, and I think that’s why we see this team is just getting stronger as the pressure comes on,” he concluded.
