The Bulls have consistently reached the finals of the United Rugby Championship, appearing in four of the last five. Yet, the championship title has eluded them each time. As they enter the 2026-27 season without several key players, the question remains: can they finally clinch the title?
After a turbulent season last year which included a coaching change and a series of losses, the Bulls managed to fight their way to the finals. Despite the adversity, including a heavy defeat to Leinster in the final, the team demonstrated remarkable resilience. This season, however, they face the additional challenge of compensating for the departure of key players like Ruan Nortjé, Wilco Louw, and Kurt-Lee Arendse.
Coach Johan Ackermann has been optimistic about the new signings stepping up to fill these gaps. "They bring a different DNA," Ackermann noted, "and we can play a little bit differently."

Another player to keep an eye on is Jeandre Rudolph. Last season, Rudolph was instrumental in the Bulls' defensive efforts, leading the URC in turnovers. His performance, alongside other notable forwards like Elrigh Louw and Marco van Staden, will be crucial for the Bulls' success.
The coaching staff has also been bolstered to enhance the team's overall fitness and strategic execution. Rupert Oberholster joins as the new head of athletic performance, with Jean Tiedt focusing on defense, Kennedy Tsimba handling the backs, and Werner Kruger overseeing the forwards.
Despite the loss of veteran players, the Bulls' goal for a top-four finish remains ambitious yet achievable. Their effectiveness in integrating new players and adapting their strategies will be key in overcoming the challenges of this season. The team’s offense last season was impressive, scoring 640 points and securing 92 tries, just shy of champions Leinster's tally.
The new recruits include Thaakir Abrahams from Munster, Curwin Bosch from Brive, and several others from domestic clubs, all expected to bring fresh energy and skills to the team. Meanwhile, the departures include several players moving to international clubs and others like Jan Serfontein who retired.
With a mix of seasoned players and promising new talent, the Bulls are poised to make another deep run in the championship. Their performance in the early rounds will be a good indicator of their potential to finally overcome the final hurdle that has tripped them up in recent seasons.
